Day 5

Today I woke up 2 minutes before I walked out the door to head to breakfast and the first thing heard was a rooster crowing, I gotta admit that that was pretty cool.  I went to Casa Hogar Douglas today and played with kiddos for the first half of the day.  Douglas recently got a new library and play area, so Renee (another intern) and I played with a small group in it.  Trying to get the kids to clean up was pretty interesting.  The kids at Douglas are pretty rebellious little things, but ridiculously cute….makes it hard to discipline.  They really did not want to clean up or listen to me at all at first, but after a few minutes clean up started going pretty well.  My Spanish worked and they understood it! Yay!

Next up was field day for all of the kids from Kindergarten up to 5th grade.  We played soccer, water balloon volleyball, amoeba tag, and a relay race.  The kids LOVED it!  I was in charge of running the soccer station, which I thought would be pretty simple…not at all.  We lost control within 35 seconds of having a group of 6 girls.  One of them shoved the ball under her shirt and they all ran away.  So imagine 5 group members and myself chasing little girls around a building pleading with them to give the ball back.  My Spanish finally prevailed again and I got the ball back and finally we were able to start the game.  After a few switches of the groups we were all done with field day.

David and Jose, two of the little boys I was hanging out with in the morning, were making a bunch of noise and I saw something flapping in the corner of my eye just in time to look over and see them throwing a rooster.  In the states, this would have been animal cruelty.  In Mexico, this was hysterical and worthy of a few pictures.  The rooster was completely content the entire time with being thrown around a fenced in courtyard.  So that was day 5 here at Back2Back, I am absolutely loving it, but I will leave you with this.

Things that I miss about home:
1)      -Shower heads that have a consistent flow of water and don’t just spray in random directions
2)      -Memory foam…nuff said
3)      -Not having to live out of a suitcase that’s in a small shared space
4)      -My teddy bear
5)      -Flushable toilet paper and
6)      -Lights in bathrooms

Things that I don’t miss:
1)      -The food…it’s amazing here!
2)      -Starbucks, got that here too!
3)      -Being super white…5 days and I’ve already got a little tan!
4)      -The humidity!
